Visiting Vienna during Christmas? Here are my top three Christmas market recommendations!

Oh Vienna, you beaut.

It’s been over 4 years since I moved to Europe, and every December since, during Christmas, I read more and more about how Vienna is one of the top destinations for Christmas markets. And if you don’t know already, I absolutely love Christmas markets. The lights, decor, trees, food, hot drinks in the cold - all of it! So this year, I vowed it was the year!

And indeed, it was! How dreamy the city is! I cannot recommend it enough. Even if it isn’t during the holiday season, the architecture alone is worth making a visit out for.

Alright let’s get into it, I visited about 6 (or 7?) Christmas markets while I was in Vienna a couple weeks ago, and wanted to share with you my top 3!

Schönbrunn Christmas Market

This was my favourite Christmas market, it was full of craft stalls, food stalls, the most delicious hot chocolate and even the creamiest garlic soup in a bread bowl. It was a little further away from the main city centre, but very easily accessible via train or bus! And did I mention the beautiful backdrop?

The beautiful 1,441 room palace is rich in history, having been resided by some of most influential figures in Vienna’s history! This palace is now a museum and 45 of the 1441 rooms can actually be visited!

Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt

The second best market I went to! Here I loved the lights, the theme and the energy! There was a park right next to it with nativity scenes and lit up figures and structures! It was absolutely beautiful. This market was about 10 minutes from me, and right in my route when I was trying to get to the other central spots so I passed by this market three times and each time, I felt the same energy and festive bliss!

Weihnachtsdorf Maria-Theresien-Platz

This was my 3rd choice, mostly because of it being sandwiched between two gorgeous architectural structures, The History museum and the Arts and Antiquities museum! Also, it had some really cute stalls with some great crafts and some delicious cider!

There were a couple more smaller markets that I visited (images below)- because every little square or pathway had Christmas stalls set up so we were bound to run into other markets that we didn’t even plan to go to!

Hope you’ve added Vienna to your places to visit after seeing this! It’s absolutely worth it!

And with that, Happy Holidays - Stay warm and Jingle all the way ;)
